Celebrating the women of Moore & Tibbits Solicitors | International Women's Day
Saturday the 8th of March marks International Women’s Day which gives us modern-day lawyers a chance to look back, with enormous gratitude and pay homage to the talents and fortitude of the women who paved the way for female lawyers in the U.K today.
Eliza Orme: was the first woman to obtain a law degree in England. Having started her degree in 1871 she was not permitted, (as a female) to graduate until 1888. Even then, she was not allowed to practise as a qualified lawyer but, undeterred, she set up her own business practising law as an ‘unqualified lawyer’; the first to be opened by a female.
Madge Easton- Anderson: Following the arrival of the Sex Discrimination (Removal) Act 1919, Madge became the first woman, in 1920 to become a ‘qualified’ lawyer, in Scotland. This was after appealing against opposition to her qualification, which was raised, given that she had started her legal training before the Act came into force. Madge later became the first woman lawyer to qualify in England as well as Scotland.
Rose Helibron: Amongst other ‘firsts’, Rose became the first woman to lead a murder trial, one of two women to be the first appointed as King’s Counsel and the first female High Court Judge.
The efforts and the personal trials that the above women faced and overcame, cannot be overstated, and women lawyers today owe a debt of gratitude to them.
Here at Moore and Tibbits, we pride ourselves on being a firm who promotes gender equality, and we celebrate the fact that there are more than 40 women employed at the practice today, including the managing partner, Debbie Anderson, and seven Heads of Department.
Debbie Anderson | Managing Partner says:
"On International Women's Day, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and incredible contributions of women in law and beyond. As a female managing partner, I am proud to lead by example and continue advocating for equal opportunities, diversity, and empowerment in our industry. Every woman deserves to be heard, respected, and supported in their journey to success.”
Moore and Tibbits celebrate the strong women all over the world, who have and continue to, pave the way for females in law as well as in every other profession and walk of life, continuing to break down barriers.
HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY.
