Don’t be an April Fool by forgetting the new rules!

As we reported in our February article: https://www.moore-tibbits.co.uk/news/its-all-change-in-employment-law-in-2025/ , April hails the introduction of the new rules for employers to follow. Here is our ‘at a glance’ reminder.

As of 1st April 2025, the new wage rates came into force and on 6th April 2025, the new statutory rates came into force.

NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE:

Employees Old Rate New Rate
Apprentices and 16-17 yrs £6.40 £7.55
18-20 yrs £8.60 £10.00

NATIONAL LIVING WAGE

21 and over £11.44 £12.21

STATUTORY RATE CHANGES: (from 6th April)

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) per week £116.75 £118.75

For up to 28 weeks after the first 3 days unless employee has received SSP within the last 8 weeks.
The minimum earnings threshold to qualify for SSP increased to £125.00 pw.

Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) 

For eligible employees, this was previously £184.03 pw but has now increased to £187.18 pw for first 6 weeks or 90% of average weekly gross earnings (whichever is lower). Then £187.18 for the remaining 33 weeks or 90% of average weekly gross earnings (whichever is lower).

Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP), Statutory Adoption Pay (SAP), Statutory Shared Parental Pay (SSPP) and Statutory Parental Bereavement Pay (SPBP):

For eligible employees this was previously £184.03 pw, increased to £187.18 pw or 90% of average weekly gross earnings, (whichever is lower).

Statutory Redundancy Limit: The cap on weekly pay for calculation of statutory redundancy, increases from £700.00 to £719.00.

Statutory Guarantee Pay: Increases from £38.00 per day to £39.00 per day.
